If you remember the last time we played the Laughayette Kittycats, you remember well that they looked like this at the end of the game:
Today will be no different. Coming off a win where we gutted it out and showed a ton of heart all game over the Mids, we've put ourselves in a position where we have a couple of things to play for:
- We've never finished lower than 4th in PL league play
- We've never finished below .500 in PL league play
- If we win today and Navy loses, we will host a quarterfinal game in Bender, where we play considerably better than we do on the road
- If we win today we'll hit double-digit wins on the season
I think we can do it. Lafayette has a lot of weapons, but if we can keep their guards (Jeff Kari, Jim Mower, etc.) contained, we'll force them to go inside to Ryan Willen and Jared Mintz. It'll take a lot of effort from Lumpkins, but I think he can step up and do a good job on them on the inside today. He didn't fare well against Mintz the first time around, and I think he'd like to show the Toronto-native that, like in the Olympics, Canadians only do well once, not twice.
The key to the game today is going to be patience. We need to work the ball around and look for the open man. Play off of the double-team Vlad is inevitably going to draw and find Simon or Hendra on a backdoor cut. Don't go to the three ball too early today (as has been noted, we've been terrible from 3 recently). Perimeter defense is going to be clutch, as I mentioned above, because Lafayette shoots almost 40% from long range. Jim Mower, in particular, shoots at 47%.
Still, it should be a pretty good crowd in Bender today, and I'm hoping our guys can pull it out. With a hard-fought game and a monumental effort from Colgate, by the end of the day we'll be making plans to host Navy on Wednesday night.
I'll be livetweeting per usual today.
Pro deo et patria and GO EAGLES!
