When you blow a halftime lead in overtime to a herd of slow moving land mammals, there's plenty of GOOD, BAD, and UGLY

Hello AU Hoops fans! For those of you who missed our fabulous liveblog earlier this evening, we dropped a heartbreaker to the Bucknell Bison in our second conference contest of the season. This does not bode well for our overall Patriot League chances, although there were some bright spots. Although Bill is usually the guru of all that is GOOD, BAD, and UGLY, I will be taking over these duties today in penance for letting the Bucknell preview slip through the cracks. Fear not, for our regular previews shall return this weekend with Colgate. Until then, on to today's GOOD, BAD, and UGLY after the jump!

THE GOOD
  • Vlad Moldoveanu - 19 points, 13 rebounds (4 offensive), 2 assists, a steal, and 4 turnovers in 41 minutes. Very, very solid. The second consecutive double-double is certainly a boost, and his constant offensive efforts make up for the .5 assist to turnover ratio. Vlad has been a bit better lately at avoiding being fouled (or as longtime reader Vidulicious coined, "Vouls"), and all of this together puts him solidly in the GOOD column tonight. If only Vlad's efforts were enough to win us games, which only ever seemed to be the case at DePaul.
  • Danny Munoz - 5 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and only 1 turnover in 28 minutes. Very solid performance from Danny.
  • Nick Hendra's First Half, Overtime - Some hot shooting, including a very deep three in overtime that briefly put us ahead near the end.
  • Lumpkins - Lumpkins has been doing much better lately, again with double digit points, after his scoring output initially dropped when Vlad came into the picture. He's finishing his shots more, and playing better at the post. While I couldn't see the game, I suspect this had much to do with him not sticking the ball way out behind him when he went up for a shot, as he is prone to do.
  • Brian Gilmore - Having Brian "Jesus" Gilmore join us for the liveblog this evening was a real treat, and one worthy of the GOOD column. This extends to everyone else who was there as well. I'm almost starting to enjoy the blogs more than the actual games, at this point.
  • Holy Cross Losing - Holy Cross dropped a home game this evening to Army, and I love when Holy Cross loses. I also love when they are the only other Patriot League team with an 0-2 record. In fact, their overall win-loss record is identical to ours. Sucks to be a Crusader.
THE BAD
  • Nick Hendra's Second Half - He went COLD.
  • Second Half Shooting In General - So did everyone else for most of the half. I was hopeful when we came out of the gate guns blazing, but that lasted all of two minutes. Another halftime lead blown. Ho Hum, nothing new here.
  • Joe Hill - I know Coach has given you the green light to shoot the three, but every time you take a painfully bad shot I cringe a little. Joe is good from beyond the arc, but some shots are just reckless. Also not too great on the other side of the arc, as there was one layup I just couldn't believe didn't go in
  • Protecting The Ball - Normally I would put this in the UGLY column, but it had as much to do with Bucknell's excellent performance as much as our own. Through the entire 45 minutes of play, Bucknell had ONE turnover. ONE. We had ELEVEN. We outshot the Bison, we out-rebounded the Bison, but in the end they just took care of the ball better.
  • Fouls - 17 to 8. Three guesses as to who had 17 and who had 8. In a 4-point game like this, if we didn't let Bucknell make 24 shots from the charity swipe, the outcome would have likely been different. Sure, they only made 18...ah, wait, that's how they iced the game.
THE UGLY
  • Blake Jolivette - This one isn't so much UGLY, but since I don't have a "DISAPPOINTED" column this is where it goes. I hear from one of AUHoops' invaluable sources that Blake's play during practice this week hasn't been great, and he's been stuck with the scout squad. He didn't see a single minute this game, joining Mike Bersch in the "players I want to see on the court, damnit" category. Here's to you, Blake. Hopefully see you this weekend.
  • The Commentary - The announcers on the audio feed for this game were ridiculous. While I wasn't listening, I heard opinions ranging from endearing love to raging hate for these guys. I hope some of our readers who were tuned in to the feed can post some of their choicer quotes in the comments.
  • Losing to Bucknell. According to our Poll of the Week, about 65% of voters believe we will have more than 4 wins in the Patriot League this season. After this game, I am leaning toward > 4 myself. Alright, maybe it won't be that bad, but we should have won this game. Bucknell just isn't what it was 4-5 seasons ago.
  • Holy Cross. Holy Cross is just ugly.

That's all I have for now, folks! Unfortunately as I didn't see the game, I'm basing a lot of this off of just the box score and the official recaps. If there's anything I missed (and I'm positive there's a bunch), please share it in the comments. Bill will be returning to GOOD, BAD, and UGLY duty on Saturday, with twice the snark but only half the Holy Cross-hatred.

Pro Deo Et Patria and GO EAGLES,
Josh

  2. As usual, JJ was very candid in the postgame. The audio is available at http://is.gd/6fI6B

  3. Having 11 turnovers is not bad at all. I was not expecting many, though, since Bucknell's defense is the path of least resistance. The problem was that Bucknell only had one. That is almost unheard of. Not enough pressure on the ball? Not quick enough to double down on Behan?

  4. 4 rebounds total between Lump and Riley? That is atrocious.

  5. I also want to add Simon to the good column. 8 points and 7 rebs with 3 assists and only 2 turnovers in 37 minutes? Very nice.

  6. Well Bill, you said Simon had the hustle to start, and lo and behold it happened and you were right. I hope JJ reads the blog!

  7. Jeff Jones should turn himself into the cops, the way he's coaching is a crime!
