I was chatting on the phone with my dad last weekend about AU basketball. We talk about the Patriot League a lot, and he tries to stay abreast of what's going on in the standings. He saw the standings on Saturday and said to me, "Isn't it kind of odd that 6 of 8 teams are below .500 in the Patriot League?" I replied, "Not really. There's a lot of parity in the Patriot League. Everyone's bad."
I know, I know, I'm being cheeky and a touch melodramatic. (Easy on the keyboards, Bison fans (and bison137), I'm well aware that Bucknell has a top 100 RPI right now). But the fact remains (as it has all season) that outside of Bucknell (I'll tell you why I do include them despite their recent loss and don't include AU in a minute), the Patriot League has a ton of parity in this unelite 8.
For reference, let's take a look at the standings at the halfway mark.
Bucknell 6-1
American 5-2
Lehigh 3-4
Army 3-4
Lafayette 3-4
Navy 3-4
Holy Cross 3-4
Colgate 2-5
Now, why did I include Bucknell above despite their recent 20-point loss to Army? Well, it was their only loss, and everyone gets one freebie. But Darryl Shazier was also sick, and he's a big part of their offense. And Army got double-digit production out of five different players. We'll let it slide.
Now, why didn't I include AU at the top of the PL? While we are second, and a pretty respectable 5-2, I still don't think we're in the same class as Bucknell right now. Before their loss to Army, Bucknell was beating up on their PL opponents. Four of six PL wins by Bucknell were double digit victories. AU's biggest margin of victory in its 5 wins? 9 points. Over lowly Colgate. AU's two losses? Double digit blowouts, one of them against Bucknell in Bender.
Back to the Patriot League as a whole though, right now the League is ranked 25th of 33 by RealTimeRPI. KenPom is a little more forgiving, handing the PL the 23rd spot, but both of those would be substantially lower were it not for Bucknell (and to a lesser extent here, AU, leading the way). If something surprising should happen and AU or Bucknell not represent the Patriot League in the NCAA Tourney, don't be surprised to see the PL get handed a 16 seed. I think we can probably avoid a play-in game, but Bucknell is basically the only team with quality tournament level wins in the whole PL right now.
So what does the rest of the PL season hold for AU in particular? Well, KenPom expects us to lose three more times this season: at Lehigh and Bucknell and home against Army. RealTimeRPI expects us to lose all three of those games and also our final regular season game against Lafayette. Meanwhile, both of these sources expect Bucknell to win out.
There will be no easy games for AU from here on out and with how easily AU could be another of the 3-4 teams right now, we'll all have to cross our fingers that the Parity League doesn't draw AU down into its lose-on-any-given-night ways.
How do you think AU will finish out? Leave it in the comments. I think how we come out against Lehigh on Sunday will really be important to set the stage for the rest of the season.

On the Verge of Patriot League Play, a Look at the Competition
Gooooood evening AU Hoops fans! I hope you're all incredibly excited for our match-up with the Lehigh Hill Pigeons in Bender Arena tomorrow afternoon at 2pm! We'll be there liveblogging courtside for you in what could very well be a semi-final or PL championship match-up later in the season. Josh will be giving you the preview of this game later, so I wanted to examine the other PL teams and how they fared overall through non-conference play. I've also got some tidbits about AU that'll I'll throw in at the end!

Some Odds and Ends
Just wanted to post some odds and ends related to the PL, enjoy!
From today's PL Press Release:
League Squads Dealing with Heartbreak
Patriot League teams have a 23-41 mark in non-League games this season, but nearly a third of the losses have been in games decided by five points or less. The Patriot League has a 7-13 record in games decided by five points or less this season, with Colgate taking the toughest luck with three of those close losses. Bucknell, Lafayette and Lehigh have each lost a pair of games by five points or less, while Navy has one as well as an eight-point overtime loss to MD-Eastern Shore.

Reality Check
So I was going to write a Patriot League Check-In tonight. I still may, though it's doubtful. The Patriot League isn't doing much right now. Overall the PL is 13-21. Hardly overpowering. Only AU (4-0) and, surprisingly, Army (3-1) have records about .500. Oof. They're out there playing some good teams I guess. Holy Cross, for example, has losses to Boston College, the College of Charleston, Harvard, and perennial powerhouse UNH (wait, what?). Ah well. Anyway, that's your check-in. If you want something more in-depth, that'll follow after an important reality check. Brace yourselves.
WE'RE 4-0. Seriously. Undefeated.
Good, Bad, and Ugly (which I increasingly dislike writing because I think it's unproductive and overly critical and not supportive, none of which are things I want this blog to be) aside, the team is playing well. How do I know this? Because we're 4-0. We're playing well enough to win. We're averaging wins by double figures. We're allowing a league best 56.5 points a game. We've got three guys averaging double figures. We have Vlad Moldoveanu, who has won back-to-back Patriot League Player of the Week awards (congrats on that, by the way, Impaler). We've got a senior threesome that is playing well, showing great leadership, and playing with a lot of guts and heart. You always want players who are playing with their internal organs, folks. Pro-tip from me to you.
So let's put it in perspective and make it clear: we're incredibly happy about the team's success. The team is playing well so far. Could it play better? Sure. But this team has a hell of a lot of promise. And they deserve to be praised and congratulated for giving this fan base hope and firing us up so early in the season.
So, thanks AU Eagles, for giving us such a great start to the season. We hope you'll continue! Keep it up, and GO EAGLES!
Now, for the rest of you who wanted a PL Check-In. Here it is, some tidbits from the Patriot League press release today:
Flip-Flop on the Scoring Charts
American and Army finished seventh and eighth in scoring offense in the Patriot League last season, but the teams have turned those numbers all the way around during their fast start to the 2010-11 campaign. The Black Knights have gone from worst to first by improving from last year's 60.3 points per game to their current mark of 73.0. American has risen up from seventh to second, though it's average has only bumped up slightly from 62.6 to 66.5. The Eagles have made it up on the defensive end by allowing just 56.5 points per game, the top mark in the Patriot League. Going in the other direction are Navy and Lafayette, who sit seventh and eighth in the League in scoring after placing in the top three last season.
St. Francis (Pa.) was practically another member of the Patriot League during the first two weeks of the season, as the Red Flash played four games against League squads to open the year. American and Lafayette each won at home against St. Francis (Pa.), while Colgate and Bucknell dropped their contests on the road. Each game except for American was decided by four points or less, with Bucknell taking a heartbreaking 68-67 defeat over the weekend. There are other common opponents early in the 2010-11 season as well, as Colgate lost and Bucknell won at home agaisnt Binghamton, with Army hosting the Bearcats on Tuesday. Lafayette fell at Wagner to open the season, while Lehigh beat the Seahawks in Bethlehem. Wagner also visits Bucknell on Nov. 29. In addition to those teams, Columbia plays three Patriot League teams by Dec. 1, beginning with Colgate at home on Tuesday and also goes to Lafayette in January. No. 6 Villanova has defeated both Bucknell and Lafayette. Princeton, Stony Brook, Buffalo, New Hampshire, Penn and NJIT also play multiple Patriot League opponents early in the season.
Moldoveanu Leading the Way
American's early success would not be possible without senior forward Vlad Moldoveanu, who leads the Patriot League with 22.0 points per game and has been a key cog in each of American's victories. He scored 24 points to help American to a 62-52 win over St. Francis (Pa.) in the season opener on Nov. 12, a team-high 11 in a 57-44 win over Albany on Nov. 15 and shared team honors with 22 points in Saturday's 82-72 win at Florida Atlantic. But where he really had to put the team on his back was on Wednesday, when he scored 16 points in the final 4:10 as the Eagles held an 18-11 advantage down the stretch in a 65-58 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore. Moldoveanu hit back-to-back three-pointers for a 53-47 edge with 3:25 to play that put the Eagles in front for good, and put the game away by making five free throws in the final 24 seconds after American's lead had been cut to two. He finished with a season-high 31 points on 9-of-15 shooting including 6-of-7 from three-point range, matching the high for a Patriot League player this season. Due in large part to that performance, Moldoveanu earned his second straight Patriot League Player of the Week award on Monday, joining Lehigh's Brett Eppehimer (1997-98) as the only two players to win the first two weekly honors of the season.
The Bison head to Harrisonburg, Virginia on the campus of James Madison University for their subregional in the event. Bucknell will play Presbyterian on Monday and Princeton on Tuesday in games that tip off at 4:30 p.m., and then face the host Dukes to complete the week at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Bucknell has a 1-3 mark for the season, and has lost all of its games played away from home after a 68-67 heartbreaker at St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday.
American is off to the fastest start for a Patriot League team, winning its opening four contests for the first time since the 1985-86 season. The Eagles continued their streak on Saturday with an 82-72 win over Florida Atlantic where Vlad Moldoveanu and Stephen Lumpkins each scored 22 points. Moldoveanu was also named Patriot League Anaconda Player of the Week on Monday for the second straight time.
While American's success was expected, Army has been a surprise with a 3-1 start. The Black Knights won their second straight road contest with a 76-66 triumph at Bryant on Saturday, and will try to win their third game in a row when they host Binghamton on Tuesday.
Defending Patriot League champion Lehigh comes back to its home court on Monday to take on returning Ivy League champion and 2009-10 Sweet 16 participant Cornell. The Mountain Hawks dropped a 69-68 final at Monmouth on Friday.
Colgate and Holy Cross are each still in search of their first win of the season, as the Raiders fell at No. 1 Duke and the Crusaders lost a close 55-52 contest at New Hampshire over the weekend. The Raiders are at Columbia on Tuesday, while the Crusaders will go to Boston College on Monday.
Lafayette will look for its first-ever victory against Penn at The Palestra when it visits the Quakers on Tuesday. The Leopards are traveling to Philadelphia for the second straight game after losing at No. 6 Villanova on Saturday.
Navy comes off a west coast trip where it lost contests to host UC Irvine, Louisiana Tech and Seattle in a subregional of the 2K Sports Classic over the weekend. The Mids try to get into the win column when they visit Towson on Wednesday.

BREAKING: Holy Cross Fires Head Coach Sean Kearney After One Season
Wow. I really thought I'd be writing this as a joke post, but I never thought it would actually happen. After one season, a 9-22 7th place finish in the Patriot League, Holy Cross has fired Head Coach Sean Kearney.
The statement from Holy Cross Athletic Director Richard M. Regan, Jr. is as follows: "This was a very difficult decision," said Regan. "This is also an affirmation of how important basketball is at Holy Cross. At the end of the day, after assessing the results and evaluating what our prospects were for the future, we felt this was a move we had to make. We have an obligation to our student-athletes to deliver the best possible experience for them while they are at Holy Cross. Sean is a quality person, something that is beyond question, which makes this decision that much harder."
Awesome. Well, like we said in our letter to you, Coach, now that you're gone, you don't have to deal with the cultural blight that is Worcester, MA.
More on this developing story. The CROSSPORTS thread on this topic is here.

Poll of the Week Recap Begrudgingly Admits the Hill Pigeons Played Well
Wellllll helllooooo AUHoops fans! Sorry I've been so MIA, I just got back from a vacation, and last week I was working hard so that I could actually go on vacation. But now I'm back and playing catch-up. I want to thank the 16 of you who are participating in the AUHoops bracket challenge. I'll be posting an update tomorrow of how it's going, but for now let me just say the field is wiiiiiide open. Anyway, that's not what I'm here to talk about. I'm here to talk about our latest poll of the week regarding the Lehigh Hill Pigeons and their matchup with the now similarly extinct Kansas Choking Birds. Join me after the jump and we'll talk!

Lehigh Going to the Dance
Lafayette shoots 3-20 from long range, and Lehigh wins 74-59. I think Lehigh will avoid the play-in game. More on this later.

Patriot League Check-In Says: IT IS GUARANTEED THE SEASON WILL PLAY OUT THIS WAY
Good evening AU hoops fans! I want to take a moment to thank the AU Hoops community for the rousing conversation that took place in the comment section of yesterday's Good, Bad, and Ugly. It's fantastic to hear everyone's views, and I emphasize everyone.
Before I begin this too much, I want you all to know that I'm writing this on my Blackberry again so if it lacks the usual panache, just be happy there's an entry at all I guess? I dunno. Anyway...

PL Check-in says we saw light at the end of the tunnel and then decided it was much too bright
Gooooood evening AU Hoops fans! Hope you all had a wonderful Monday. If you're still residing in the DC area and work for the federal government, please be advised that you have a 2 hour delay (kind of) tomorrow morning. Since that's the case, please feel free to comment on some of our recent posts!
Before I start tonight's Patriot League Check-in, I want to remind all of you about Alumni Programs' event on Wednesday night that is offering a ticket to the Army game and access to the Eagles Club for only $15! If you're already a season ticket holder, email Heather Buckner and let her know, and you'll be able to get into the Eagles Club for free! There are only a few slots left, so be sure to sign up if you're planning on going to the game. (Those tasty mini potato skin things that Bon Appetit makes are wonderful; take it from someone who has eaten a baker's gross or so in his life).

Patriot League Check-In Has a Lot of Striations
Well, I hope you've all dug out after the Snowmageddon and an avalanche of comments to Saturday's Good, Bad, and Ugly hit us this weekend. Don't look now, but we're looking to get another 10-20 inches tomorrow into Wednesday. Woooo boy, I don't know what Washington, D.C. collectively did to Mother Nature, but she is PISSED.

PL Check-In: Turbo Edition
So I know that I know I owe all of you a PL check-in today, because it's Monday. But I've been doing some thinking, and you know, you all know about these things called ESPN.com, Rivals.com, cbs.sportsline.com, and/or sports.yahoo.com, and thus you can look up standings, teams played, results, etc. for pretty much any team out there. So here's the thing, I'm going to give you the standings, tell you if a team beat a team or lost to a team they shouldn't have, and then I'm going to call it a day. Besides, I have a Good, Bad, and Ugly, to write, and that's, I think, more interesting for everyone.

A Very Short PL Check-In
Soooo here we are again, Monday night, ready to get a fresh dose of PL Check-in. Not a lot of games played this past week, none for our beloved AU Eagles, so we'll get right down to it and see what our PL breth...blood enemies did in the past seven days.

The Actual Patriot League Check-In
Well well well. It was quite a week for the Patriot League. And by quite a week, I mean quite a week of futility. Since last week's entry, Patriot League teams have gone 7-18. Woo. This caps off a season where Patriot League teams have gone 24-46 overall. Of the 24 wins, only 3 have come against teams that now have winning records (Army beat Harvard, who is 5-1, and Lehigh and Navy both beat Quinnipiac, who is now 4-3. That's pretty ugly. A lot of the teams that PL wins have come against are miserable too (teams that are 0 or 1 win for the season). Whoever makes it from the PL certainly will not have the backing of coming from a strong league, certainly the PL must be counted among the weakest at this point in the season.
As for how the specific teams did during this past week...
Army
6-2 overall, 2-1 last week
Won: @Fairleigh Dickinson (1-8) 61-40, Bryant (0-8) 64-58
Lost: @Buffalo (3-3) 67-74
Julian Simmons (14.6 ppg) and Cleveland Richard (13.0 ppg) continue to be a dynamic duo for the Black Knights who are playing absolute lockdown defense against their opponents. Army is the only team is the only team in the Patriot League with a record over .500
Lafayette
4-5, 0-3
Lost: @LaSalle (5-2) 79-67, @St. Peter's (3-4) 58-56, @Princeton (3-4) 62-48
Navy
4-5, 2-1
Won: Qunnipiac (4-3) 65-62, Penn (0-5) 73-67
Lost: Neutral court to GWU (6-1) 81-69
For the second straight week Chris Harris is the Patriot League Player of the Week. He leads the PL and is 20th in the nation with 21.4 PPG. Harris gets to the line constantly; he has 60 FTs already this season. Also very dangerous from 3. Harris right now has to be the PL Player of the Year frontrunner
Bucknell
4-6, 0-3
Lost: Cornell (7-2) 104-98 (OT), @Binghamton (3-6) 64-60, @Boston U. (3-6) 63-53
Despite having 5 players in double figures against Cornell, the Bison just couldn't pull it out. Sad bison.
Lehigh
3-5, 0-3
Lost: Stony Brook (6-2) 71-52, @Columbia (3-4) 75-70, @Dayton (5-2) 89-71
Zahir Carrington has had a very disappointing season so far. He is averaging a mere 6 ppg, 4 rpg, 22 mpg, and is only shooting 33% from the field. For someone who was on the pre-season all-PL team, these numbers are average at best.
Holy Cross
2-7, 2-1
Won: Marist (0-6) 68-56, @Brown (4-7) 85-79
Lost: UMass (4-5) 84-63
Colgate
0-8, 0-3
Lost: @Syracuse (8-0) 92-58, Maine (3-4) 76-66, @Rutgers (5-2) 76-67
Kyle Roemer, (17ppg) remains a big scoring threat and a sure all-PL team member...if he can stay healthy. So far in his career, he hasn't been.
Well that's your update there, stay tuned for your Speculation Tuesday entry coming up soon!

Bucknell

So everyone in the PL is having this kind of season, right? RIGHT!?
Goooooood afternoon AU basketball fans. And buenos tardes to Frank Borden if he's reading this from Mexico, who knows. So it strikes me that while many of you are digging graves for our (as-of-lately-not-so) mighty AU Eagles, you may not know about how the rest of our Patriot League friends and foes (but mostly foes) are faring in their out-of-conference schedules. Well, I figured I'd look that up and provide it in one nice, neat tidy package for you. This will catch you up on the games played to date, and every Monday I will update you on the past week's games. Get it? Got it? Good.
Off we go!
