LIVEBLOG! AU Eagles vs. UMBC Rabid Old Yellers

  1. Hinkle had some serious rust. I started watching at the five minute mark. The first possession he gave up a bad turnover, and his passes should have been stolen on the next two.

UMBC showed the weakest defense I have ever seen in D1 bball. AU could have done anything it wanted. Mostly, AU stopped themselves in the first half, spending large anmounts of time taking "opportunity' shots instead of swinging the ball and setting up. Shots when the player is open for a moment but rushing, not set, hesitating, a bit too far or leaning back. Every one of those shots let the UMBC defense off the hook.

Everytime we worked the ball with precision, we got off one of those dream 3 pointers: you know, when your feet are set, body square to the basket, forward toe just an inch beyond the 3-pt line, and no defender in sight. Munoz got 2, Luptak got 2, Brewer got one from a baseline drive by Hendra, and Lumpkins got 3-pt play from a beuatiful bounce pass from Vlad on a drive. It was like taking candy from a baby, but we spent most of the first half looking like we just had dinner.
