Some Odds and Ends

Just wanted to post some odds and ends related to the PL, enjoy!

From today's PL Press Release:

League Squads Dealing with Heartbreak
Patriot League teams have a 23-41 mark in non-League games this season, but nearly a third of the losses have been in games decided by five points or less. The Patriot League has a 7-13 record in games decided by five points or less this season, with Colgate taking the toughest luck with three of those close losses. Bucknell, Lafayette and Lehigh have each lost a pair of games by five points or less, while Navy has one as well as an eight-point overtime loss to MD-Eastern Shore.

They Really are "Free" Throws for Patriot League Teams
Patriot League teams are trying to disprove any notion that standing still and shooting the ball 15-feet away from the basket is a difficult task. Three Patriot League teams rank among the top 40 in the country in free-throw shooting percentage, including Lafayette up at No. 3 nationally at 80.1 percent from the charity stripe. Bucknell comes in 21st at 76.1 percent, with Lehigh at 36th with a 74.7 mark. Colgate also comes in above the 70 percent barrier at 71.4, just outside the top 50.

Three-Man Game Leading the Eagles
American has slowed down with three straight losses after its 5-0 start, but the Eagles still should be in good shape with big men Vlad Moldoveanu and Stephen Lumpkins and outside threat Troy Brewer leading the way. Moldoveanu leads the team and is second in the Patriot League with 20.3 points per game, good for 35th in the country. Lumpkins is 15h in the League in scoring (12.4 ppg) and leads the way in rebounding (8.8), while Brewer is eighth with 13.6 points per contest.

Common Opponents
Patriot League teams have now combined for three matchups against four different opponents in 2010-11, and none of those matchups has produced a sweep in either direction. St. Francis (Pa.) played four games against League squads to open the year. American and Lafayette each won at home against St. Francis (Pa.), while Colgate and Bucknell dropped their contests on the road. Each game except for American was decided by four points or less, with Bucknell taking a heartbreaking 68-67 defeat. Bucknell and Army won but Colgate lost at home against Binghamton and Lafayette and Bucknell fell to Wagner while Lehigh beat the Seahawks. Bucknell's win over Columbia on Wednesday was the first for a Patriot League team after Colgate and American fell to the Lions last week. Patriot League teams have played six opponents twice, and the results have not been as good as No. 12 Villanova, Princeton, Buffalo, Penn and New Hampshire have each beaten a pair of Patriot League squads. American won but Navy lost to Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Onto other AU news. We don't cover the women's team as often as we probably should. They're having a pretty good season so far and are off to a 5-4 start. However, they will face an obstacle going forward as last year's PL POY Michelle Kirk has left the team due to personal reasons. The team has gone 3-2 without her and should still be competitive in the PL. It will just be a bit harder without Kirk's leadership and 13.8 points per game.

I guess that's it for now. Sorry for the lazy update here, but hey, if the PL is going to write it all out for me, I'd be foolish not to take advantage, no?

Pro deo et patria and GO EAGLES!

  1. Thanks for the overview.

I graduated from AU a few years back and was wondering if the winner of the PL championship game is still guaranteed an automatic bid to the NCAA tourney?

  2. There is a new format for the NCAA Tournament this year, so while the PL champion is still guaranteed spot, it's now much more likely they will have to go through a play-in game as a 16th seed in order to compete in the main event. Of course, the probability of this is not necessarily set by the NCAA so much as the quality of the PL.

  3. There are now four Tuesday first round games. All of these games are part of the official tournament and all teams participating in these games get a share of the tournement money.

  4. To tack on to what JC said, the winners of the Tuesday games get 1st round winner tournament money. Hence if AU was one of the play-in game winners, it would receive the same share that a 9 seed beating an 8 seed would get.

So it may actually be better for AU to get a Tuesday game and have a winnable opponent than a straight 15/16 seed.
